Introduction

The Choir was formed in 1961 in Portsmouth by a group of postmen based at the Head Post Office who found that they enjoyed singing whilst sorting the mail. The original name of the Choir was the Portsmouth Post Office Choir. It later became the Portsmouth and District Male Voice Choir which, in 1974, was changed to the Solent Male Voice Choir. The new name reflected the extended area of membership and concerts. There are, at present, thirty-two choristers in the Choir.

The Solent region extends from Havant and Hayling Island to Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham and Southampton. To the north it extends to Petersfield and Romsey. Members of the Choir come from around the whole area, even including the Isle of Wight.

In the past the Choir has sung at many festivals but, at the present time, devotes most of its time to performing for local charities and events.

Last year, 2011, the Choir celebrated its Golden Jubilee, and the members attended a Celebration Dinner at South Downs College Restaurant to mark the occasion. This was a very good event, and was enjoyed by all those who attended with their guests. This year is going to be a busy year and details of all concerts arranged so far can be found on the Events Page.

The reputation of the Choir continues to grow and, consequently, new members are urgently needed to swell the present ranks of over 32 members. Anyone, of whatever level of experience (or not) who would like to join the Choir please contact the Musical Director, Howard Wilkie (details on the Concert List page) or Roy Sweasey on 02392 593 902
