IntroductionThe Choir was formed in 1961 in Portsmouth by a group of postmen based at the Head Post Office who found that they enjoyed singing whilst sorting the mail. The original name of the Choir was the Portsmouth Post Office Choir. It later became the Portsmouth and District Male Voice Choir which, in 1974, was changed to the Solent Male Voice Choir. The new name reflected the extended area of membership and concerts. There are, at present, twenty-nine choristers in the Choir. The Solent region extends from Havant and Hayling Island to Portsmouth, Gosport, Fareham and Southampton. To the north it extends to Petersfield and Romsey. Members of the Choir come from around the whole area, even including the Isle of Wight. The members of the Choir sing for the enjoyment and companionship that is to be found in a male voice choir. The Choir’s aim is to benefit the community at large and to assist charities and organisations within the Solent area. Any organisation in need of funds that can provide a venue, a good piano and an audience can contact the Concert Secretary when suitable dates can be arranged. The Choir has a record of being very successful in raising funds for a whole host of organisations. The Choir has sung at many music festivals, at the Llangollen Eisteddfodd and with several other choirs in South Wales and various parts of Southern England. In 1986, to celebrate Solent’s Silver Jubilee the Choir hosted a combined concert at the Ferneham Hall, Fareham. Choirs from Oxford, Basingstoke, Reading, Hart and Weybridge joined Solent putting over three hundred male voices on stage. Thank you for visiting our website. | |
